To think that we had some nice things to say about Blankos Block Party before we knew just how ‘big’ it was. Featuring as part of this article, we also look at the top 5 NFT games on the Epic Games Store currently listed or coming soon.

Prologue — Web3 games on Web2 platforms

It’s been a year since Valve took a bold stance to exclude blockchain games from their gaming ecosystem Steam.

Representatives from Steam say that they haven’t made any changes to this policy, and don’t have any plans yet regarding the inclusion of NFT games onto their gaming platform.

Does Steam hate blockchain games?

Not entirely. Gabe Newell, the President of Valve expressed his position on crypto games as well as blockchain technology in general, in one of the interviews with Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Gabe said that the tech is promising however…

Let’s grow together!

“… it’s not the blockchain itself that is “bad” but the people using it in improper ways. On the other hand, frauds and scams can exist at any time. In this case, it’s a matter of building the proper regulatory framework, so “bad people” have no chance of using it in a bad way.”

We can all understand where he is coming from. Back in 2016, Steam had started accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment only to realize that 50% of the transactions were fraudulent.

Epic games, one of Steam’s biggest competitors has since jumped on the bandwagon and released Blankos Block Party, the first Web3 game to launch on to their platform on September 28, 2022.

Buidlbee — Top 5 NFT games on Epic Games Store

In case you haven’t read the content above, Blankos Block Party is part of this list.

However, let’s briefly look at other NFT game titles that feature, or are expected to launch on the Epic Games Store.

Forge Arena NFT game — Coming soon

First person shooter (FPS) games are all the rage in Web2 gaming with Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Valorant and others being my top picks.

Forge Arena isn’t any different.

Built on WAX, Forge Arena FPS NFT game has an in-built play-to-earn mechanic with NFT drops every quarter. The game itself is yet to be released by NEWGEN Studios on the Epic Games Store from December 2022.

This 5v5 tactical FPS is built with the idea of becoming a major eSport, sporting some notable names such as the co-founder of OPSkins, a marketplace popularly known for trading Counter-Strike NFT weapon skins.

According to the gameplay trailer, teams of five players shoot at each other with a vast selection of guns across environments to try and get the most kills. It’s fast-paced, like Valorant and the weapons are familiar. The player skins on the other hand and the overall aesthetics of the game have a futuristic look inspired by many sci-fi movies.

STG Football NFT game — Out now!

Officially licensed by the NFL Players Association, STG Football is a free-to-play American football game.

It is a real-time arcade football game with multiplayer mode supporting unique 4v4 gameplay. True to the sports, STG Football is a game of teamwork and strategy.

The graphics are nothing close to the Madden NFL 23 (PlayStation) however, which just launched in August 2022, but a great feat for a blockchain game nonetheless.

It includes NFLPA super stars like Stefon Diggs, Josh Allen, Aaron Donald, Davante Adams, Patrick Mahomes, Cooper Kupp and Aaron Rogers just to mention a few.

BONUS: All the NFL players are NFTs tradeables on the in-built marketplace.

It launched in beta on the Epic Games Store in October 2022. Due to the nature of the sport, it is currently available in the US and Canada only, with a worldwide release date sometime in 2023.

GRIT — NFT game. Coming soon, unknown date

Yee haw! A battle royale play-to-earn NFT game set in the wild west. It’s a game that is set to resemble Red Dead Redemption in my opinion, but it’s only available in closed beta on Epic Games Platform. So far, it’s popularity and the only reason it is on this list, is because it is the first NFT game to be listed ( not released) on the Epic Games Store.

GRIT Wild West Battle Royale NFT Game
GRIT NFT Game play-to-earn look good. Will it launch in Steam too?

The animated trailer leaves a lot to be desired, but the developers at Team GRIT promise a great gaming experience for both casual and crypto gamers.

Something worth noting is that the game is also listed on Steam, in Early Access. Going by the information I just provided above, perhaps Steam is considering NFT games after all but are still doting a few ‘I’s and Ts’. Or, which I believe is the most probable reason, someone forgot to update the platform.

With no website or supporting publishers, I hope the game lives up to its hype.

Superior NFT game — Coming soon

They had me with their uncanny animation style.

Another FPS game, Superior is a trendy, third person co-op roguelike shooter game that is part of the Gala Games ecosystem. It is currently in development with Early Access set for December 2022. The beta launch promises to be an almost complete game, with the Alpha release set for March or April 2023.

Up to three players team up to fight superhero bosses that have turned evil.

Players select a character (NFTs) from four choices, and go on randomly selected missions. This is a great concept for any Web2 or Web3 game — not knowing where your next mission/gameplay will be, or being completely unaware of the next boss battle is exciting. Rewards are in the form of weapons and you can unlock new skills for each character.

The creators at Gala Games assure players that Superior is a AAA title.

Superior is also listed on Steam while NFTs are still banned according to its policy. Drifter Entertainment, the creator of Superior, has confirmed that a Steam version of Superior will not support NFTs or any other blockchain technology. So perhaps, Steam is truly dotting its ‘I’s’ and crossing its ‘T’s’.

To be sure, I have added Superior to my Wishlist on Steam to stay up to date with any developments, and I’ll be sure to update this article in case of any news.

Blankos Block Party NFT game — Out now!

Finally! Blankos Block Party needs no introduction as it has its own full review article here.

All there is to know about Blankos Block Party NFT Game https://buidlbee.com/an-in-depth-guide-to-blankos-nft-game-review/

For purposes of this article, however, it is important to mention that Blankos Block Party NFT free-to-play, play-to-earn game is available on the Epic Games Store.

In conclusion

More blockchain game developers are focusing on fun to play games that cater to both casual and crypto players. A great strategy considering many players are still uncertain of crypto games, wallets, NFTs and Web3 in general. For a game to be termed ‘innovative’, it needs to be more than just an NFT game. The players call the shots.
