Vitalik Buterin published a new article in which he expressed his general vision of the current problems of crypto applications, with particular criticism of the friendliness of their interfaces for ordinary users. He expressed his wishes with respect to both application developers (such as crypto wallets) and Layer 2 blockchain system developers.

Common problems in crypto-soft

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, in his new review article, offered his critical vision of modern crypto-industry software. Here are the main points from his text:

  • The entry threshold for the average ordinary person to the crypto market is still high due to complex interfaces and technical nuances that are unknown to newcomers. At the moment, this is the main problem for mass adoption of crypto, not attacks by regulators and so on.
  • Developers of wallets and other applications need to come up with new, easier ways to send cryptocurrencies if they want to create a truly mainstream product. Innovation at the UI/UX level, rather than all new technical features, is now urgently needed.
  • As an example, many cryptocurrency wallets still don’t allow users to manually speed up their transactions, which could get stuck in the blockchain mempool. All the technical solutions are there, but there are no user-friendly interfaces for them. By working on such fundamentals, the blockchain as a whole will seem clearer and friendlier.
  • A large number of users in the crypto market have no idea what “gas” is in the Ethereum network or how commission payments are arranged. In these cases, even with ETH on their balance, they cannot make a payment. The basics of education are sorely lacking right now.
  • Overloaded with features and intuitively ununderstandable interfaces of decentralized applications, oriented toward the technical public push away mass users in favor of centralized analogues. We ourselves are creating just such a vector of user overflow.

Overall, the text gives the impression of a kind of manifesto to developers to make them think about the needs of the mass, ordinary crypto user, paying attention to the friendliness of their graphical interfaces.

About controlling rollups

Addressing the developer community, Vitalik Buterin also stated the rather controversial idea that developers can control all rollups. Rollups is a scalability solution for Ethereum that performs transactions in the external part of the blockchain (layer 2), outside the main Ethereum network (layer 1). The Ethereum co-founder recently revealed this in an interview for The Network State podcast.

Such a bold proposal to control transactions has caused some community wariness, as it could lead to even more centralization of Ethereum. Vitalik himself prefers not to call it “control,” but uses the neutral term “insurance.” Buterin explains the need for such insurance solely by the ease of changing the protocol when bugs are detected.
