There has been a lot of buzz on the internet since Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook announced that Facebook’s parent company will henceforth be known as Meta. In this article, you will learn about Metaverse, how it works, and how you can be a part of it. So, continue reading to the end.

What is Facebook’s Metaverse?

Many years ago, one possible place to find a virtual representation of yourself in action was whenever you took a nap and probably dreamed about yourself.

But fast forward to 2021 when Facebook announced the change of its name to Meta and introduced Meterverse as its new ideology designed to bring technological revolution to the world in areas of having virtual properties, cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and how we interact with technology generally, the possibility of having a 3D version of ourselves online(Avatar), etc.

Let’s grow together!

Metaverse is not a straightforward or simple term to explain because it is somehow complex due to the different phases it encompasses and the fact that its full potential has not been discovered as it is still in the development stage.

To some people, it is a  representation of our realities in a virtual state and to some people, it’s just a technological advancement and nothing too special about it. With Metaverse, it was proposed that you could meet people and play games, do business transactions, live in another country, and rent out spaces virtually and some of these propositions are already seeing reality.

With Metaverse, you are not only a consumer or a creator but will have an opportunity to experience the beauty of it live with an avatar being your direct replica in the virtual world.

However, it is very important to note that the idea of metaverse has been in existence even before Mark Zugerback the creator of Facebook was born. Facebook as a tech giant is just trying to make transitioning into the metaverse very seamless by creating platforms and environments for Virtual Reality.

History of Facebook’s Metaverse

Facebook is one of the early pace setters of social media. Mark Zugaberk invented it in 2004 and since its introduction, it has changed the way we interact socially, politically, and every other way because almost everyone is on Facebook or probably using a Facebook product like WhatsApp or Instagram.

And in 2021, Facebook already showed us a new path to go by with the introduction of the metaverse. Metaverse is designed to change the internet into a world of 3D in the future.

The first time Metaverse was used as a word was in 1982 in a science-Fiction novel called Snow Crash and was written by Neil Stevenson.

Before the novel was published, ideas of the Metaverse have been in existence and could be traced back to 1838 when an English scientist called Charles Wheatstone introduced a popular concept, Binocular vision where two(2) images are used to create a 3D vision and this made a way for the invention of stereoscopes.

A stereoscope is a device that is used to view the different sides of the same object with both eyes. This device has been developed and is being used as a tool for playing virtual reality games.

The Metaverse Offerings

Metaverse offerings are plenty and cannot be quantified now since it is a futuristic idea in a developmental stage. Nonetheless, Facebook has launched a few platforms that will aid the swift transition to the metaverse. Below, are some of them.

The Horizon Metaverse Experience

Have you ever imagined visiting your friends’ homes and your friends also visiting you without physically leaving your houses? Well, that imagination may be real now as Facebook introduces Horizon homes. Horizon home is a metaverse home-based product that was introduced by Facebook.

The horizon home experience gives opportunities for individuals to acquire a virtual home and set up the home with whatever home designs they wish. Currently, users can set up the home using third-party apps but as time goes on, Facebook promises to release an update where you no longer need third-party apps to set up your virtual homes. This means you can design and upload the setup of your virtual homes.

It is a known fact that wherever there is a social gathering or settlement, social vices such as sexual harassment, abuse, and others are possible experiences and as such, Facebook promises to eject anyone that is guilty of any offense. Virtual neighbors can as well report any erring neighbor or individual to Facebook and wait for disciplinary action.

Horizon venues offer users the opportunity to enjoy parties, attend musical concerts, join several social groups and interact with other users on the platform from the comfort of their homes.

Immersive Gaming Quest

Can you imagine playing a  Virtual reality(VR) game and due to the fear of being hit by an attacker in the game, you fell down and broke the gift you bought for either your boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s birthday and everyone in the room laughed at you so badly?

Well, an Immersive gaming quest gives you the opportunity to experience virtual 3D games live as you are part of the players in the game. These VR games could be played and enjoyed using the Meta quest 2 headsets. It is an upgrade to the previous Oculus quest.

Big gaming companies like the parent company behind Fortnite has raised over one billion dollars from investors to cover for the company’s transition into the metaverse in the long run.

These big gaming companies have succeeded in recreating epic games into the Metaverse so everyone can enjoy their favorite games in a brand new way.

Fitness With VR

Gone are the days when carrying out fitness activities was very boring and only the strong in the heart could endure. Well,  thanks to Metaverse because with metaverse, fitness activities are now very interesting and enjoyable.

If you had seen Netflix’s 2019 movie Falling inn love, you would remember that the lead actress Gabrielle Dias had a Virtual Reality (VR) headset on and was cycling statically.

Obviously, the fitness industry is ready and has started tapping into the wonderful Virtual Reality technology. some cryptocurrency projects have marked their presence in the fitness industry and as result, Bitwalking wants to pay its users for every step they take with their devices(phones).

Takeaway

You would agree that change is a constant thing in human existence. A child born today will someday grow into adulthood. Since the introduction of the internet in 1983 which is widely accepted as its official birth year, we have witnessed great transformations from web1.0 to web2.0 and now,  web3.0 is already being used even if its full potential has not been utilized.

With the existence of Blockchain technology, transitioning into the Metaverse would not be a difficult thing to do because it has laid the needed foundation for Metaverse to thrive effectively.

The launch of the NFTs has taken us a step closer to actualizing the dreams of Virtual Reality. NFTs present the opportunities to own virtual art properties and can be stored on a very unique wallet address that acts as your identity.

Big blockchains like Ethereum, Binance, and Solana offer smart contract services that NFTs can be deployed and traded on successfully.

Finally, Facebook has presented itself as a leading company that will provide services that will help the world in transitioning to Virtual Realities.

A lot might have not been achieved but over the years, as new companies dive into the Metaverse industry, we believe the industry will record massive growth and adoption all over the world.
