The Metaverse used to be a place only those in the tech world spoke about, but now even Hollywood’s A-listers want a piece of it!

Why do people adopt Web3 technology?

Web3 is the newest evolution of the internet. At its core, Web3 technology operates through blockchain networks, cryptocurrency, and NFTs to verify ownership. Web3 is unlike previous versions of the internet as its four core features enable users of Web3 to operate freely on the internet without fear of having faceless corporations owning and profiting off their data.

These are the core features that benefit Web3 users:

Let’s grow together!

  • Decentralization: the new internet is owned and operated by the people that use Web3 instead of multinational corporations with personal goals.
  • Permissionless: there are no gatekeepers in Web3; everyone is allowed to participate.
  • Cryptocurrency: this frees Web3 users from relying on the bureaucracy of the traditional banking system.
  • Trustless: this automates transactions and operations through smart contracts that only get executed once all sides of an agreement are upheld.

Why are celebrities getting involved in Web3?

As Web3 gains more attention, its influence is seeping outside the expected tech circles and into Hollywood through the strategic use of the Web3 industry and its surrounding platforms. In the last few years, celebrities have swarmed into the metaverse to benefit from all of the wonderful opportunities that Web3 has to offer. The best part of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency is that you don’t need to be involved in the technology industry to reap the benefits of the new technology. Numerous celebrities have jumped onto the Web3 bandwagon without writing a single line of code in their lifetime.

There are five ways that celebrities have gotten involved in Web3:

  • Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs): Many celebrity NFT projects have been coming out of the woodwork recently. Snoop Dogg’s Sandbox collaboration and Steve Aoki’s NFT collection are examples of celebrities creating NFT projects.
  • Virtual Worlds: The temptation to play god has always been on humanity’s bucket list. It’s no wonder many celebrities have taken to creating their virtual worlds. The Snoopverse and Paris World are two such virtual worlds.
  • Metaverse concerts: Justin Bieber held a real-time concert in the metaverse in 2020, and since then, other A-list celebrities have taken to the virtual stage, like Lil Nas X and Ariana Grande.
  • Web3 brand deals: We live in a time of the influencer economy. Brands have started opening their eyes to the growth potential in the Web3 space. This is why Dior created a virtual model as a digital doppelganger of Angelababy for their Shanghai fashion show.
  • Cryptocurrency: Elon’s involvement with DOGEcoin’s race to the moon goes without saying, but Mr. Mars isn’t the only celebrity attaching their name to an altcoin project.

Who are the top 5 celebrities involved in the Metaverse?

1. Steph Curry

The NBA superstar coined the trademark “Curryverse.” This is the name of the basketball hero’s newly minted NFT project and virtual environment. According to the patent the Golden State Warrior filed, the Curryverse will entail “online games in which players can earn non-fungible, digital tokens, or application tokens for exchange, trade, sale, or purchase in an online marketplace.” Either way, it’s refreshing to see athletes venturing into the grey waters of the virtual world.

2. Gary “Vee” Vaynerchuk

Gary Vee has been somewhat of a prophet for the Web3 space and NFT technology. Before the underlying blockchain network entered the mainstream, he preached the need to adopt Web3 technology and invest in NFT and crypto technology. His early involvement in the Web3 industry primed Gary Vee to take full advantage of the NFT market. This inspired the media mogul and serial entrepreneur to start the VeeFriends projects.

3. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher

This Hollywood power couple has long supported blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. The couple has made it their business to educate the world about the potential of Web3 and the need for the youth and minority groups to get involved in developing the new internet. This vision has manifested itself in a new NFT cartoon series, Stoner Cats, that is only available for viewing for 10 000 lucky NFT holders. Each NFT was minted and sold at an initial floor price of 0,35 ETH. The project blew up in value and has since raised the crypto couple over $8 million.

4. Paris Hilton

Paris is the self-proclaimed “Queen of the Metaverse.” She hosted an NFT promoter panel with fellow NFT superstar Gary Vee. The long-standing Hollywood It girl even gave Jimmy Fallon the rundown on all things NFT to him.

“Glad I explained what an NFT was to him,” Paris boasted after her appearance on the Jimmy Fallon Show.

She has since partnered with the Sandbox to create her own metaverse experience in the form of a multipurpose Virtual world called the “Paris World” that will allow her fans to interact with her and buy virtual merchandise in the form of in-game NFT purchased and traded on the Sandbox marketplace.

5. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber, the international pop sensation, surprised his fans and the rest of the world with his virtual popup concert after the pop star announced his partnership with the virtual entertainment company Wave. The “interactive virtual experience” combines gaming, real-time rendering, and motion capture technology to make a completely immersive performance for his fans to enjoy simultaneously from all over the globe.
