Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter have announced they’ll be funding a new education initiative called The Bitcoin Academy. The program will consist of 12 education courses and teach members of the Marcy Houses community in Brooklyn financial literacy. 98 problems left?

The mission of The Bitcoin Academy

According to the statement, the program aims to provide education, empower the community with knowledge, and eliminate some of the barriers so that residents can learn more about Bitcoin and finance in general.

The Bitcoin Academy currently focuses on Marcy Houses, where Jay-Z grew up, but founders hope to expand to other neighborhoods soon.

“Bitcoin is becoming a critical tool for many in Africa and Central and South America. We believe the same potential exists within communities in the US. Our goal is to prove that making powerful tools more available to people enables them to build greater independence”, — explained Jack Dorsey.

Let’s grow together!

 He also said it isn’t just about Bitcoin but about long-term thinking, local economies, and self-confidence.

About the program

The first classes will consist of the following topics:

  • “What is money?”;
  • What is cryptocurrency?”;
  • “What is Blockchain?”;
  • “How to keep yourself safe from scammers?”.

Jay-Z said, “everyone should be empowered to make informed financial decisions to care for themselves and their families.”

What we know about the program:

  • Classes will be offered online and in-person from June 22 through September 7.
  • In-person classes will take place two evenings per week, and dinner will be served.
  • “Crypto Kids Camp” programming will take place on two Saturdays for Marcy kids and teens aged 5–17.

Courses are accessible to all Marcy residents, including kids. Also, to make it even more accessible, initiative creators vowed to provide devices and data plans for all who need them. Residents may keep the appliances.
