CoinMetrics named the best crypto assets of 2022, and the results will surprise you

CoinMetrics has identified the top five most profitable assets of 2022 that have generated the highest profits this year (for particular periods). In addition, they identified the most popular crypto asset — this year, a stablecoin has beaten all the popularity peaks of previous years. The attached charts allow us to extract all the necessary details from these findings.

Selecting the Top 5

All 36 crypto assets selected for analysis registered a decline in return (ROI) throughout the year 2022. But for five cryptocurrencies, it was not as critical as others. According to the CoinMetrics report, the top five performers were TRX, Monero, BNB, Ethereum Classic, and DOGE. Each of them managed to turn record-breaking profits at a certain point of the year, which affected the aggregate result.

  • Tron showed the best results in May — plus 33%, and in March — plus 19%.
  • July was the most successful month for Monero, with a 41% growth, followed by March with a +31%.
  • BNB showed the best results in July, increasing profitability by 33%, followed by +12% in March.
  • Ethereum Classic added a whopping +166% in July and +66% in March.
  • The Dogecoin index was +89% in October, making it the best month in terms of growth, followed by March with +8%.

All the results of the asset performance study are summarized in this chart. As you can see, the year was quite difficult, the crypto winter did not allow anyone to become the absolute leader throughout the year, but some successful periods managed to form the above-mentioned Top 5.

Unconditional Leader of the Year

In the context of increasing sanctions and problems with payment transactions, stablecoins have become particularly important. For example, experts estimate that over $100 million has been transferred to Ukraine through crypto assets.

The donations continued throughout the year, and recently the United Nations sent USDC to Ukrainians displaced from their homes. Globally speaking, more than $7 trillion has settled into stablecoins now, a record compared to previous years. 2022 was a record year for stablecoins — the year of this form of cryptocurrency.

The balance of power between the individual stablecoins can be seen from the chart — there are two unconditional leaders: USDT and USDC. And USDC is rapidly catching up with the historical leader USDT. We have already written about this trend in our article about the war between stablecoins.
