The decentralized microblogging platform Bluesky has seen a rapid increase in users in Brazil following the country’s ban on Elon Musk’s social media network, X. On September 1, Bluesky, also known as Bsky, revealed in a post that it gained a million new users in just three days. This growth comes after a Brazilian Supreme Court ruling on August 30 that ordered the suspension of X, citing the company’s failure to designate a legal representative in the country.
Following X’s removal, Bluesky experienced a notable surge in traffic. A developer from the platform reported a dramatic increase in daily usage, stating that traffic had risen to 15 times the usual peak. Bluesky, a decentralized network founded by Jay Graber and announced in 2019 by Jack Dorsey, was officially launched in early 2024 and has since amassed a user base of over 7.6 million by September.
Meanwhile, X faces ongoing legal challenges in Brazil. The platform has been at odds with Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over its refusal to block specific accounts accused of spreading election-related disinformation. On September 2, a panel of five justices upheld the suspension of X, keeping the platform offline in the country.
The ban has sparked debate within the cryptocurrency community, with some speculating that similar actions could occur in other nations.
